Just a little resume of what's going on in this thread:
1-Hangs reported due to FC cards. SOLVED with firmware upgrade. 2-Hangs suspected to be due to using framebuffer. DISABLING fmb not tested.
I'm not using framebuffer; i selected text mode at install time. (and I would have removed any "vga=xxx" line from grub.conf anyway)
I think that it's the keyboard & mouse switcher (also from HP) that hangs the system, because when working from the system console, it takes about 5 minutes to hang;
I haven't got around installing oracle to see if it hangs under stress (this seems to me like a different problem from the one I'm having)...
Also it never hanged when I was working from the network (as I said I have not stressed it yet);
I am able to confirm that this "console hang" also happens with 2.4.19-304 (sp2a); (I'm using it because I want to test Secure Path from HP,and it's the last supported one).

3-Hangs due to asynch io. SOLVED by applying a RHEL 3.0 (on SLES8, is that correct)?. 4-Hangs due to bad reiserfs filesystem. SOLVED with reiserfs fsck. Correct? 5-Finally, Andrew is experiencing hangs due to high load. There is here no FC card, but there is async io and reiserfs. Also there is a note that taking out the broadcom cards contributes to a better uptime. This can be a driver problem or an IO-APIC issue. Hangs not reproducible on test system, only in production (sigh).
Do I miss something?

is there someone running sles 8 on proliant dl740 ? because randomely it hangs hard (no output message in the console or logs) here is the setup: HP Proliant DL740, bios P47(12/08/2003), 4CPUs 2.8GHZ, 12GB RAM, 2 fc adapters (also from HP).
I thought installing oracle was like a walk in the park, but it seems that there are problems...
