what OS? if its a flavour of UNIX, are your kernel parameters set?

I could not start up oracle database due to this error "ORA-03113 (See ORA-03113.ora-code.com):
end-of-file on communication channel ". Can someone please tell me what
it means and how to fix it? I need a resolution really bad.
